Capsule Module Spec Sheet

The Laser Wire® Capsule Module is the primary installed laser source for all Laser Wire® cabling profiles. USB-powered, compact, and heat-sinked for continuous operation. Full specs, wiring, and installation guide. V1.06.

Product Overview

The Laser Wire® Capsule Module is a USB-powered laser device specifically designed for all profiles of Laser Wire® cabling. The slim design (50mm x 14mm diameter) makes it easy to hide. Multiple power configurations allow easy pairing to illuminate any environment. Heat sinked to run on continuous power, this module fits in the palm of your hand and can be taken on the go — powered by 5V DC wall power or run continuously. Brightness can be externally controlled through PWM among other dimming options.

This module is designed for stage performances, retail and trade show displays, events, consumer products, and more. Never power the module ON when there is no Laser Wire® cable attached. The input is USB Male A; the output is a customized FC connector.

Installation Instructions

Safety First

Use 5V DC Isolated Power Supply. Confirm ripple wave of constant voltage source is less than 5%. Do not use RC Voltage reduction or non-isolated power supply. Never power the module ON when no Laser Wire® cable is attached.

1
Install the module so minimum pressure is on the cabling

The most common reason for failure is the wire kinking where the FC connector boot meets the Laser Wire® cabling. Mount the module first, then route the cabling with no tension or compression at the connector.

2
Attach Laser Wire® cabling to the FC output

Apply a small dab of coupling gel to the FC connector tip. Screw the FC connector hand-tight onto the module output. Do not overtighten.

3
Connect power and verify operation

Size your power supply at 20% above the module’s rated consumption. Check positive and negative poles of DC connector wires before powering on. Verify light starts right where the FC coupler ends.

FAQ

Do I need a controller to operate it?

No. The Capsule Module operates at 5V DC — anything providing at least 1A at 5V will work: USB wall adapters, power banks, USB ports on computers, even cell phone chargers. Brightness can be adjusted via PWM using an Arduino or other microcontroller.

Why did the light stop at the connector?

The cabling kinked at or near the FC connector boot, which is the minimum bending point. You will need to make a new connection at the point where the light stopped. See the Patch Cable Installation guide.

The module appears to be moving. Why?

Laser Wire® captures coherent laser light, which creates spatially random interference (speckle) when light refracts off the surface. This speckle effect is most noticeable when moving your head side-to-side. It can be increased with PWM at certain intervals or reduced by adding different jacketing over the cabling.
