Laser Wire® Systems  ·  Comparison

EL Wire vs Laser Wire®

Both are thin, flexible, glowing wires. Beyond that, they are very different technologies with different strengths. This guide explains what each one is, where each excels, and how to decide which is right for your application.

The Fundamental Difference

EL Wire (Electroluminescent Wire) works via electroluminescence — a phosphor coating around a thin copper wire that emits light when energized by AC current from an inverter. The result is a soft, diffused glow that comes from the phosphor coating reacting to an electric field.

Laser Wire® works via light diffusing optics — a glass optical fiber that receives focused laser light at one end and deliberately leaks that light along its entire length. The result is a crisp, vivid glow that comes from laser-quality light scattering out of the fiber’s core.

These are fundamentally different physics. The practical differences flow from that.

Where EL Wire Wins

EL Wire Advantages
  • Lower upfront cost. EL Wire is significantly less expensive per foot and per project for most budgets.
  • Wider color range. EL Wire is available in pink, yellow, orange, purple, aqua, UV reactive, and a wide range of blues, greens, and whites that Laser Wire® cannot match.
  • Simpler system. One inverter powers multiple feet of wire. No precision connector. No coupling gel. Easy for beginners.
  • Soft glow aesthetic. Some applications call for a soft, diffuse, hazy glow — not a crisp laser line. EL Wire is the right tool for those looks.
  • IP67 available. Standard EL Wire can be fully waterproofed for outdoor, marine, and submersion applications.
EL Wire Limitations
  • Shorter lifespan — brightness degrades with hours of use
  • Requires AC inverter — conversion losses, inverter buzz at high frequencies
  • Thicker than Laser Wire® — harder to route in very tight spaces
  • Higher power consumption in high-frequency color modes
  • No gradient capability without multiple separate runs

Where Laser Wire® Wins

Laser Wire® Advantages
  • Longer lifespan. 8,000–10,000 hour module life. The fiber itself is passive and does not degrade. Module replacement only.
  • Thinner profile. 0.9mm fits where nothing else can go. Routes along automotive seams, into model-scale details, through thin garment channels.
  • Tighter bend radius. 5mm minimum radius follows curves that EL Wire cannot match.
  • Pure spectral color. Laser wavelengths produce saturated, vibrant color quality that phosphor-based EL Wire cannot replicate.
  • Simple 5V DC power. Any USB power source works. No inverter, no AC conversion.
  • DualDrive gradient capability. Natural color gradients across a single fiber — impossible with EL Wire.
Laser Wire® Limitations
  • Higher upfront cost per foot and per project
  • One module per cable — cannot run one module to multiple cables
  • Limited to red, green, blue, and white (Ice profile)
  • Precision FC connector required — slightly more involved installation
  • Standard product is IP20 — not for submersion or outdoor unprotected use

Which One Is Right for Your Project?

Answer these questions:

  • Is the installation permanent or long-running? If yes, Laser Wire®’s lifespan advantage matters. If it is a one-time event or short-term use, EL Wire is likely more cost-effective.
  • Do you need a color other than red, green, blue, or white? If you need pink, yellow, orange, or aqua, EL Wire is your only fiber-based option.
  • Does it need to fit into a very tight space? If the minimum route diameter is under 3mm, Laser Wire® is the only option.
  • Is the aesthetic a crisp line or a soft glow? Crisp and vivid calls for Laser Wire®. Soft and dreamy calls for EL Wire.
  • Is it wearable and will it be washed illuminated apparel? Both can be washed with proper installation. Laser Wire® Welted Profile is purpose-built for machine-wash wearables.
  • Is this automotive or extended-temperature? Laser Wire® has an automotive-grade version certified to -40 to +105°C. EL Wire does not have equivalent certification.
