Quick Reference: What inverter do I need?

Find your EL product below and match the length or area to the right inverter type. When in doubt, size up — running an inverter at 80% capacity keeps it cooler and extends the life of both the inverter and your EL material.

EL Product Amount Recommended Inverter Notes
EL Wire Up to 3ft Micro battery pack or CR2032 Pocket-sized, great for small costume details
EL Wire Up to 12ft AA Button Battery Pack Pressable through fabric — great for wearables
EL Wire Up to 25ft Silent Wave Rechargeable Near-silent, USB rechargeable
EL Wire Up to 50ft 12V Medium Inverter Wall or 12V DC power required
TruEL™ Wire Any length Mondo HP Inverter Takes ~2× power of standard EL Wire. Halve the rated footage when using standard inverters
TruEL™ Wire Up to 300ft Commercial 24V TruEL™ Inverter For long runs, permanent installs, and stage
VynEL™ Up to 30 sq in Silent Wave or Silent AAA Battery Pack Good for small panels and wearable patches
VynEL™ 30–100 sq in Mondo Inverter (up to 180 sq in) Tuned specifically for VynEL™ frequency
VynEL™ 100–300 sq in Commercial 24V VynEL™ Inverter Available in 100, 150, and 300 sq in models
SewGlo™ Up to 100ft 12V Micro PWM or Silent Wave Standard EL Wire inverters work — check footage rating
EL Tape (Parallel) By sq in Parallel EL Inverter Do NOT use Split EL Tape inverters on Parallel tape
EL Tape (Split) By sq in Split EL Tape Inverter Split and Parallel inverters are NOT interchangeable
Common Questions

This is the most common source of confusion when buying EL power. Here's the simple version:

A battery pack is a complete, self-contained power source. It has the battery inside and the inverter circuitry built in. You connect your EL product directly to it, and it works. No additional parts needed. These are what come included in ready-made kits.

A standalone inverter converts power but doesn't supply it. You need a separate DC power source — a wall adapter, a 12V battery, a vehicle connection, or a USB power bank. The inverter takes that DC input and converts it to the AC signal your EL product needs. Standalone inverters are used when you have a fixed power source, need more output, or are wiring a permanent installation.

EL Tape comes in two electrode constructions — Parallel and Split — and they require fundamentally different inverters. Using the wrong one will either produce very dim output or damage the tape.

Parallel EL Tape runs at lower voltage (100–240V) and higher frequency (800–1100Hz). It uses the same inverters as EL Wire, which means you can run EL Wire and Parallel EL Tape off the same battery pack. Good for wearables, costumes, and custom shapes where cost efficiency matters.

Split EL Tape runs at higher voltage (280–300V) and lower frequency (650–1000Hz). It requires its own dedicated inverter line. Split tape is brighter, longer-lasting, and better suited for commercial applications like egress lighting, signage, and retail displays.

⚠ Never use a Split EL Tape inverter on Parallel EL products (or vice versa). The voltage and frequency mismatch will damage the tape and may damage the inverter.

If you're unsure which tape you have, check the product page — it will be labeled Parallel or Split explicitly.

TruEL™ Wire is physically larger than standard EL Wire (4mm vs 2.6mm diameter) and draws roughly twice the power. This has two practical implications:

First, if you're using a standard EL Wire inverter with TruEL™, cut the rated footage in half. An inverter rated for 50ft of EL Wire will only drive 25ft of TruEL™ reliably. Running more than that will result in dim output and may shorten the inverter's lifespan.

Second, to get TruEL™ to its maximum brightness (300–400 cd/m standard, over 1000 cd/m overdriven), you need the Mondo HP Inverter. It pushes higher voltage and frequency specifically tuned for TruEL™ Wire, which extracts far more brightness than standard inverters can. Do not use the Mondo HP with standard EL Wire, EL Tape, or EL Panels — the higher output will damage them.

Inverter TypeTruEL™ OutputNotes
Standard EL inverterDim — functional but not optimalHalve the rated footage
Mondo HP InverterFull brightness 300–400 cd/mRecommended for all TruEL™ use

Technically yes — EL products will often light up with third-party inverters. But there are two important caveats.

First, using a non-Ellumiglow inverter with Ellumiglow EL products voids the product warranty. EL materials are sensitive to voltage and frequency. An inverter running at the wrong frequency will either underdrive the material (dim, flat output) or overdrive it (brighter short-term but accelerated degradation). Our inverters are tuned specifically to the products we sell.

Second, specialty products like TruEL™ Wire, VynEL™, and SewGlo™ have tighter requirements than standard EL Wire. Using a generic inverter with these products is more likely to cause problems than with standard wire.

⚠ Ellumiglow EL products used with third-party inverters are not covered under warranty. If your EL material stops working and was powered by a non-Ellumiglow inverter, we cannot offer a replacement.
