Common Questions

Ready-made kits include a pre-soldered connector and a battery pack or inverter — you just pop in batteries and it glows. No tools, no wiring. These are the right choice if you're new to EL Wire, working on a costume, or need something working the same day.

Buying by the foot gives you raw wire with no connector attached. You'll need to add your own connector (EZ Snap is the easiest method) and pair it with a separate inverter. This is the right choice when you need a specific length, want to run multiple wire colors off one inverter, or are building a larger installation.

Not sure what connector method to use? The How to Connect EL Wire guide walks through EZ Snap connections step by step.

Every EL Wire setup needs an inverter to convert DC power (battery or wall) into the AC signal that makes EL Wire glow. Choosing the right one comes down to how much wire you're running and whether you need portability.

TruEL™ WireTruEL™-specific inverterTakes ~2× more power than standard wire

Important for TruEL™ users: TruEL™ Wire draws roughly twice the power of standard EL Wire. If an inverter is rated for 50ft of EL Wire, limit TruEL™ to 25ft on that same inverter. For maximum brightness, use a TruEL™-specific inverter — it's tuned to the right voltage and frequency for the product.

Using an inverter from a different brand with Ellumiglow EL products voids the product warranty.

EL Wire is one of the most popular costume lighting materials because it's thin, lightweight, produces no heat, and glows 360° along its entire length. You can sew it onto fabric, run it along seams, outline shapes, or coil it into designs.

Great for
  • Halloween & cosplay costumes
  • Tron & sci-fi themed builds
  • Festival & rave outfits
  • Dance & theater costumes
  • Bike & safety visibility gear
Tips for wearables
  • Use EZ Snap connectors — no soldering
  • Hide the battery pack in a pocket or pouch
  • Standard wire for flexibility; TruEL™ for repeated flexing
  • Vibrant Blue is the brightest color

If you want to integrate light directly into the fabric rather than running wire along the surface, check out SewGlo™ illuminated thread or VynEL™ flexible panels.

Standard EL Wire is well suited to temporary event lighting, short set pieces, and low-movement applications. For anything requiring long runs, repeated flexing, outdoor exposure, or high brightness — TruEL™ Wire is the correct product.

The core difference is construction: standard EL Wire uses fragile angel hair wires as electrodes, which are the #1 cause of field failures under tension or movement. TruEL™ replaces those with two solid core wires, eliminating that failure point entirely. Stage and theatrical companies that had avoided EL Wire due to reliability concerns use TruEL™ specifically for this reason.

Most EL Wire sold online uses a thin tin wire core (instead of copper) and low-grade phosphor that fades quickly and produces uneven, patchy light. Ellumiglow's standard wire uses a 0.7mm copper core — 25 to 50% thicker than most competitors — which produces a brighter, more even glow and lasts significantly longer.

The phosphor quality matters as much as the core. Cheap phosphor appears dim almost immediately and degrades unevenly, causing hot spots and dead zones. The Electric Optics line uses top-grade phosphors for consistent, vibrant brightness across the full length of the wire.

Ellumiglow standard wire
  • 0.7mm copper core
  • Top-grade phosphor — even glow
  • Vibrant Blue is brightest on market
  • Consistent diameter across full length
Typical cheap alternatives
  • Thin tin core — breaks easily
  • Low-grade phosphor — fades fast
  • Uneven glow, hot spots, dead zones
  • Short lifespan under movement or flexing
