Six Applications That Work Best with Panels

EL Panels' combination of zero hotspots, thin profile, and panel form makes them uniquely suited for applications where even a small LED strip would create visible bright spots.

🚗
Automotive Gauge Backlighting
EL Panels cut to the exact shape of instrument cluster faces and gauge bezels. Even illumination eliminates hotspots — every part of the gauge face glows at the same brightness.
Split electrode recommended
Backlit Displays & Signage
EL Panels behind translucent display faces, frosted acrylic signs, and menu boards. No LED arrays to diffuse — the panel surface is itself the light source.
Parallel or Split depending on size
🔬
Astrophotography Flat Frames
Perfectly even illumination for flat frame calibration images. EL Panels produce no flicker, no hot spots, and a consistent color temperature — exactly what astrophotographers need.
5" and 14" kits available

Parallel vs Split Electrode — Which Do You Need?

All EL Panels use one of two electrode configurations that determine how the panel is powered and whether zones can be controlled independently. Pre-cut shapes use Parallel. Custom and OEM panels can be ordered in either configuration.

parallel
Parallel Electrode
Single Continuous Sheet

Parallel electrode panels have a single front phosphor layer and a single continuous rear electrode across the entire panel surface. The entire panel glows as one zone from a single power connection. This is the standard configuration used in all pre-cut shapes and most off-the-shelf EL Panels.

Zones 1 (entire panel)
Connections 2-wire (standard EZ Snap)
Inverter type Any standard inverter
Availability All pre-cut shapes in stock
  • Costumes and wearable props — one connector, one switch
  • Flat frame astrophotography kits — uniform field required
  • Signage and display backlighting — entire face lit as one
  • Any application where zones are not needed
  • Beginner-friendly — same wiring as EL Wire and EL Tape
Zone A Zone B
Split Electrode
Two Independent Zones

Split electrode panels divide the rear electrode into two separate, electrically isolated zones. Each zone connects to its own inverter or inverter channel, allowing each half of the panel to be powered, dimmed, or animated independently. Essential for instrument panels where separate indicator sections must activate at different times.

Zones 2 (independently controlled)
Connections 3-wire (shared front, split rear)
Inverter type Dual-channel or 2× inverters
Availability Custom order — contact us
  • Automotive instrument panels — separate gauge sections
  • Animated alternating effects — alternate zones pulse in sequence
  • Long-run gauge faces where you want left/right section control
  • OEM product integration where multi-zone control is a spec requirement
  • Scientific equipment with indicator zones that activate conditionally

Panel Area & Power Calculator

Enter your panel dimensions and instantly see the total area and the recommended inverter for your application. All EL Panels draw current at the same rate per square inch — area determines battery pack size.

Area (sq in) 24.0
Area (sq cm) 154.8
Recommended Inverter 9V Battery Pack

A 9V Battery Pack inverter handles panels up to 60 sq in. Good choice for this panel size.

Astrophotography Flat Frames

Every serious astrophotographer calibrates their images using flat frames — images taken through the same optical train with a uniform light source in place of the sky. These frames capture the optical signature of the telescope (dust shadows, vignetting, sensor artifacts) so it can be subtracted from the final image.

The problem is finding a truly uniform light source. EL Panels are among the best available — perfectly even illumination across the entire panel surface, zero flicker, no hot spots, thin enough to sit flat against a telescope aperture.

We offer pre-built Astrophotography Flat Frame Kits in 5-inch and 14-inch circle formats — the most common telescope aperture sizes. For non-standard apertures, custom panels cut to your exact telescope diameter are available.

EL Panels — Common Questions

EL Panels and EL Tape are the same electroluminescent technology in different form factors. EL Tape has a pressure-sensitive adhesive backing — you peel and stick it to any surface. EL Panels have no backing — they come as a flat panel you mount mechanically or with your own adhesive. EL Panels are better for backlighting applications (gauge faces, displays, signage) where you want a precise panel shape rather than a continuous strip. EL Tape is better for accent runs, costume applications, and anywhere you want to stick and go.

Parallel Electrode panels have a single continuous rear electrode — the whole panel glows as one zone from a single 2-wire connection. This is the configuration used in all pre-cut standard shapes. Split Electrode panels divide the rear electrode into two electrically isolated zones, each controlled independently with its own inverter or inverter channel. Split electrode is ideal for automotive instrument panels and animated multi-zone effects where different sections of the panel need to activate, dim, or flash independently.

Yes — EL Panels can be cut to virtually any shape. The panel material cuts cleanly with scissors or a sharp blade. After cutting, the exposed edges must be sealed with Edgeguard EL Sealant to prevent moisture ingress and short circuits at the cut edge. For complex shapes, logos, or large-format panels, we offer a custom fabrication service — contact us with your artwork or dimensions and we'll quote it. We also offer a laser-cut custom panel service for precision shapes.

The right inverter depends on the total panel area you're powering. EL Panel area is measured in square inches. A 9V battery pack inverter typically powers up to 60 square inches. Our AA battery pack inverter handles up to 24 square inches. For large panels or multiple panels in parallel, our USB-rechargeable inverters can handle significantly more area. Use the Panel Area & Power Calculator above to match your panel area to the right battery pack — EL Panels and EL Tape draw the same amount of power per square inch.

EL Panels have a rated lifespan of approximately 5,000–7,000 hours at standard brightness. Unlike LEDs that fail suddenly, EL technology dims gradually — by the halfway point you may notice roughly a 50% reduction in brightness compared to when new. For astrophotography flat frames and scientific applications where consistent brightness matters, it's worth recalibrating your exposure settings periodically as the panel ages. For costume and display applications where brightness consistency over years isn't critical, the gradual dimming is usually not a concern.

Standard EL Panels are rated for indoor use. For outdoor applications, the panels and all connections should be sealed with Edgeguard EL Sealant to prevent moisture damage. IP68-rated custom EL Panels are available for fully weatherproof outdoor installations — contact us about outdoor panel requirements. EL Panels operate on AC current from an inverter (typically 100–120VAC at very low wattage) so standard outdoor safety precautions apply to all connections and the inverter housing.
