A complete breakdown of each VynEL™ variant — Flow, HD, Cling, Splash, and Organic — with technical specs, intended applications, and a selection guide to help you choose the right one for your project.
VynEL™ is not a single product — it is a family of electroluminescent panel technologies built on the same core EL phosphor and high-grade material platform. Each variant is engineered for a different set of application requirements. Choosing the right one at the start of a project avoids redesigns and procurement delays later.
All variants share the same base advantages over competing EL technologies: NASA-grade materials, 2 to 4× higher brightness than standard EL panels, custom shape and size availability, and Ellumiglow production support from prototype through production volume. Organic VynEL™ extends the upper brightness limit further still — up to 700 cd/m² — for applications where maximum visual impact is the primary requirement.
Flow is the thinnest and most flexible VynEL™ variant. At 0.25 to 0.5mm, it is thinner than most fabric layers and drapes with the garment rather than stiffening it. It heat bonds directly into fabric using standard heat press or iron technique. The result is a panel that becomes part of the garment — not a component added to it.
HD is the production standard for performer costumes, branded apparel, and outerwear. At 250 to 400 cd/m², it is 2 to 3x brighter than standard EL panels. The additional thickness (0.5 to 0.8mm) compared to Flow adds slight structure — which is actually an advantage on jackets and bags where some body in the panel area looks intentional. Heat bondable and washable.
Cling applies like a vinyl wrap film — it conforms to curved surfaces using electrostatic adhesion rather than a pressure-sensitive adhesive, which means it can be repositioned and removed cleanly. It is engineered for vehicle body panels, architectural surfaces, and temporary brand activations. PPF with UV inhibitors is required over all Cling installations to protect the EL layer.
Splash is built for sustained water exposure. The panel construction provides sealed edges and moisture-resistant lamination. The critical upgrade over Flow and HD is Ripcord™ cabling — a waterproof connection system designed for the lead entry points where moisture ingress typically occurs first. Splash is the specified variant for life jacket integration, marine safety gear, and any outdoor application with extended rain or spray exposure.
Organic VynEL™ uses an organic electroluminescent phosphor layer that nearly doubles peak brightness compared to standard VynEL™, reaching up to 700 cd/m². This is the variant for applications where maximum visual impact is non-negotiable — stage props, display panels, high-visibility signage, and large-format brand installations viewed in ambient or daylight conditions. Available in HD and Decal derivative configurations.
Standard VynEL™ panels filter approximately 95% of the audible noise emitted by the EL phosphor layer. Organic VynEL™ does not achieve the same attenuation — the operating hum is noticeably more audible. In high-energy environments (stages, events, outdoor installs, vehicles) this is imperceptible. For quiet applications — offices, libraries, museum installations, or garment wearables worn close to the body — Organic VynEL™ is not recommended. Use VynEL™ HD or Flow instead.
Standard VynEL™ inverters will not drive Organic panels to full brightness. Organic VynEL™ requires a specially tuned inverter configured for its higher drive frequency and voltage parameters. Ellumiglow supplies matched inverters for all Organic orders — specify Organic VynEL™ when requesting a project quote.
| If your application is... | Use this variant |
|---|---|
| Lightweight wearables, activewear, thin fabrics | VynEL™ Flow |
| Costumes, jackets, brand apparel, high brightness needed | VynEL™ HD |
| Vehicle wraps, architectural panels, curved hard surfaces | VynEL™ Cling |
| Marine, life safety, sustained water exposure | VynEL™ Splash |
| Maximum brightness for stage props, displays, or signage in ambient/daylight | Organic VynEL™ (HD or Decal) |
| You need maximum brightness in a thin garment-integrated panel | VynEL™ HD |
| You need a panel you can barely feel when wearing | VynEL™ Flow |
| The application is outdoors but not fully marine | VynEL™ Splash if rain-exposed; VynEL™ HD if weather-resistant is sufficient |
| The surface is a vehicle or curved architecture | VynEL™ Cling — and read the Automotive Installation Guide |
| The environment is quiet and noise from the panel would be noticeable | VynEL™ HD or Flow — not Organic VynEL™ |
| The application is a wearable worn close to the body in quiet settings | VynEL™ Flow or HD — not Organic VynEL™ |
All variants — including Organic VynEL™ — are available in custom shapes, sizes, and colors. Organic orders require a matched tuned inverter; note this when submitting.
