Installation Process

Follow these steps in order. Do not skip ahead, especially on surface prep and electrical connection. Each stage affects the one that follows.

01
Preparation

Design, Measure & Plan

Before anything touches the vehicle, confirm your panel design, dimensions, and routing path for the wire leads. VynEL™ Cling is custom-produced to your specifications, so take precise measurements of every panel or zone you intend to cover.

  • Measure all target panels including any curves, cutouts, or hardware obstacles
  • Identify where wire leads will exit the panel and where they will route to the inverter
  • Plan your 12V tap point in the vehicle before applying anything
  • Contact Ellumiglow with your specs to confirm panel sizing and configuration prior to order
02
Preparation

Surface Cleaning

Adhesion quality is entirely dependent on surface prep. Any contamination between the panel and the vehicle surface will cause lifting, bubbling, or premature failure.

  • Wash the vehicle surface with soap and water, then dry completely
  • Wipe all target panels with isopropyl alcohol using a lint-free microfiber cloth
  • Allow the surface to dry fully before proceeding, at least 10 minutes
  • Do not touch cleaned surfaces with bare hands

Panel temperature matters. Work in ambient conditions between 60°F and 90°F (15°C to 32°C). Cold surfaces reduce adhesion strength.

03
Application

Position the VynEL™ Cling Panel

Dry-fit the panel before peeling any backing. Confirm alignment, lead placement, and edge positions with the vehicle powered off and on a flat, level surface when possible.

  • Use masking tape to temporarily hold the panel in position for a dry check
  • Verify wire leads are oriented toward the planned routing channel
  • Confirm the panel sits flat with no edge tension pulling it away from the surface
04
Application

Apply the Panel

Start from one edge and work progressively across the surface. Do not peel the entire backing at once on larger panels.

  • Peel back a small section of backing from one edge and press firmly to start
  • Use a squeegee to work out air as you slowly peel and press across the surface
  • Apply firm, overlapping squeegee strokes moving away from the starting edge
  • On curved panels, use short heat gun passes at a safe distance to help the material conform; never hold heat in one spot
  • Work slowly. Bubbles caught early can be lifted and repositioned. Bubbles discovered after full application are much harder to correct

Heat Gun Warning — All VynEL™ Cling Products: Heat gun use carries risk of permanent damage on every VynEL Cling product. If you must use heat to assist conforming on a curved surface, keep the gun moving at all times and never hold it on one spot. When in doubt, skip the heat gun entirely and use hand pressure with patience.

05
Application

Trim Excess Material

Once the panel is fully adhered, trim any overhang using a utility knife or precision scalpel. This step requires a steady hand and should only be performed by a trained installer.

  • Use a straight edge or guide where edges are linear
  • Cut with light, controlled pressure to avoid scratching the vehicle paint
  • Keep cuts shallow and never cut near the bus bar or flex cable lead areas
Critical Warning

Do not cut into or near the bus bar or lamination area. Cutting the bus bar will destroy the panel and cannot be repaired. This step is for experienced installers only.

06
Electrical

Connect to 12V Power

VynEL™ Cling operates through an inverter that converts the vehicle's 12V DC power to the AC required by the electroluminescent layer. Custom-built panels ship with an inverter included. If you ordered stock panels from ellumiglow.com, an inverter must be purchased separately before proceeding with this step.

  • If your panel leads do not already have a connector, strip the ends carefully with a wire stripper
  • Connect the panel leads to the inverter included with your custom build, or to your separately ordered inverter if using stock panels
  • Connect the inverter's positive and negative leads to your chosen 12V source (fuse box tap or battery)
  • Use a fused tap at the fuse box to protect the circuit
  • Secure all connections with heat shrink tubing or quality electrical tape to prevent shorts
  • Route all wires away from moving parts, sharp edges, and heat sources
  • Tuck and secure wire runs before final close-out

Test the panel before routing and securing wires. Power the system on and confirm the panel illuminates fully. It is far easier to correct wiring before final routing is complete.

07
Final Check

Test, Inspect & Secure

Before the vehicle goes anywhere, complete a full inspection with the lighting on and off.

  • Power the panel on and inspect for any dead zones, uneven illumination, or flickering
  • Check all panel edges for lifting or air pockets
  • Confirm all wires are secured and no leads are under stress or tension
  • Verify no wires interfere with doors, hoods, trunk lids, or moving mechanical parts
Mandatory Final Step
PPF isRequired.

Paint Protection Film is not optional. No vehicle leaves the shop with exposed VynEL™ Cling. Without PPF, the EL material is exposed to moisture, UV degradation, debris impact, and contamination that will shorten the lifespan of the installation significantly and may void product coverage. Use a PPF product that includes built-in UV inhibitors. Standard PPF without UV inhibitors is not acceptable for this application.

Moisture Barrier

PPF seals panel edges and prevents water ingress from rain, car washes, and road spray from reaching the EL layer.

UV Protection

Prolonged UV exposure discolors and degrades the phosphor layer in EL material. Your PPF must include built-in UV inhibitors. Standard PPF without UV inhibitors is not sufficient for this application.

Impact Resistance

Road debris, rock chips, and abrasion can crack or puncture unprotected EL panels. PPF absorbs these impacts.

Surface Durability

PPF resists scratches, scuffs, and light vandalism, keeping the visual surface clean and professional long-term.

How to Apply the PPF Layer

1
Confirm your PPF includes built-in UV inhibitors before you begin. Standard PPF without UV protection is not acceptable for VynEL Cling installations. All installation must be fully complete, wiring secured, and the system tested and verified working before any PPF goes on.
2
Measure and cut PPF to cover the entire illuminated surface. Do not leave any exposed VynEL material. Overlap panel edges by at least 10–15mm onto the surrounding vehicle surface.
3
Wet-apply using standard PPF installation technique. Use a slip solution, apply from the center outward, and squeegee out all air and liquid from beneath the film.
4
Wrap panel edges and fold PPF inward where panel edges meet door jambs, body gaps, or trim lines. This prevents edge lift and locks out moisture at the most vulnerable points.
5
Allow full cure time before vehicle exposure to weather. Follow the PPF manufacturer's cure specifications, typically 24–72 hours before washing or extended wet exposure.
6
Optionally apply a printed automotive vinyl or 3M wrap over the PPF to add branding, graphics, or a full-color design layer over the illuminated base. The PPF acts as the protective foundation, and the printed wrap sits on top.
No Vehicle Leaves Without PPF

Failing to apply PPF may result in premature discoloration, panel failure, or adhesion failure. It will also affect any coverage claims with Ellumiglow. This step is non-negotiable.

Maintenance & Upkeep

VynEL™ Cling with a properly applied PPF layer is durable and low-maintenance. Keep up with the basics and your installation will perform for years.

Regular Visual Inspections

Periodically inspect all panel edges for any signs of lifting, moisture bubbling, or PPF delamination. Catch edge lift early and re-seal before moisture can reach the EL layer beneath.

  • Check edges monthly, especially in the first season after install
  • Look for any darkening or discoloration of the illuminated area when powered on
  • Inspect connector points and wire exits for any corrosion or wear

Electrical System Checks

EL material will naturally dim over its lifespan. This is normal. Significant sudden brightness loss or uneven illumination typically points to an inverter or connection issue rather than the panel itself.

  • Check connections annually or after any electrical work on the vehicle
  • Use a multimeter to confirm voltage to the inverter if dimming is observed
  • Never attempt to modify or splice the panel's flex cable leads

Cleaning

The PPF surface cleans exactly like any other automotive PPF installation. Use a pH-neutral automotive soap and a soft microfiber wash mitt. Avoid harsh solvent-based cleaners directly on the PPF surface.

  • Touchless or hand wash preferred over automatic brushes
  • Avoid high-pressure spray directly at panel edges
  • Do not use abrasive compounds on the PPF-covered VynEL panels

Seasonal & Climate Considerations

Extreme cold can temporarily affect EL brightness and PPF flexibility. Extreme heat can soften PPF adhesive. Both are normal if the install was done correctly.

  • Avoid running the system during extreme cold startup until the vehicle has warmed
  • Park in covered or shaded environments where possible in high-heat climates
  • Inspect PPF edges at the start of each season

The Challenge

Covering a modern crossover SUV with compound curves, flared arches, large flat doors, and a front fascia in a single coherent illuminated surface required custom-fit panels for every zone. The panels had to align at seams, route wiring cleanly through the body, and maintain consistent brightness across a large total surface area.

The vehicle remained functional throughout, with the EL system connected to the vehicle's 12V supply and controlled independently from factory systems.

The Approach

  • Each major body panel was measured and a custom VynEL™ Cling section was produced to match
  • Panels were applied sequentially, starting with the largest flat surfaces and working toward curves
  • Wiring was routed through existing body gaps and terminated at a central inverter bank in the engine bay
  • PPF with UV inhibitors was applied over the entire lit surface before the vehicle was powered up for final testing
  • The complete installation was tested panel by panel before final sign-off

Result

The finished vehicle produces a uniform, continuous teal glow across all panels with no visible seams or dead zones. In a dark environment the effect is total. In daylight, the panels are nearly invisible beneath the PPF layer, keeping the vehicle's original white paint visible as the base. The installation has been used for event appearances, product photography, and promotional video work.
