TruEL™ Wire
Troubleshooting

Not glowing? Flickering? Only lighting partway? Start here before contacting support. Most TruEL Wire issues trace back to a small set of root causes. This guide is written specifically for TruEL’s dual-core construction.

Level: Diagnostic
Note: TruEL has no angel hair corona wires

Run This Checklist First

Upgrading from Standard EL Wire?

TruEL Wire has no angel hair corona wires. Standard EL troubleshooting steps that reference checking corona wires do not apply. All TruEL connections are to its two solid core wires only.

  • Inverter is a TruEL-compatible model (not a standard EL or HP/Commercial EL inverter)
  • Inverter power output is sufficient for your total wire footage (see inverter guide)
  • Battery or power supply is fully charged and outputting correct voltage
  • TruEL locking connectors are fully seated and locked — not EZ Snap connectors
  • Both core wires are contacted inside the connector terminals
  • Connector terminal screws are tightened on stripped wire, not jacketed wire
  • Inverter power switch is in the ON position
  • Wire is not sharply kinked or crushed at any point along its run

Common Issues and Fixes

Most Common Wire does not glow at all
Inverter is not TruEL-compatible
Standard EL Wire inverters may not produce enough output to drive TruEL Wire. Verify your inverter is labeled as TruEL-compatible. If it is a standard EL inverter, it will need to be replaced.
Connector not fully seated
The TruEL locking connector must click into place in the inverter output port. Remove, re-insert firmly, and lock.
Dead battery or disconnected power
Check that the battery pack or power supply is charged, connected, and switched on.
Core wires not making contact
Open the connector and verify both stripped core wires are inserted into their terminals and the terminal screws are tightened on the stripped section, not the jacketed section.
Common Wire is dim or less bright than expected
Inverter is undersized for the wire footage
An inverter running near its wattage limit cannot sustain full brightness. Calculate your total footage and confirm the inverter output meets it with 20% headroom. See the inverter guide.
Low battery voltage
As battery charge drops, output voltage drops, which reduces inverter output frequency and brightness. Charge the battery and retest.
Cold temperature
EL Wire (including TruEL) is dimmer in cold temperatures. This is normal behavior. Operating range is -20°C to +60°C.
Check This Wire flickers or pulses
Loose connector terminal
A core wire that is partially contacting a terminal will flicker under movement. Power off, open the connector, ensure the terminal screw is tightened directly on stripped wire, and lock the connector again.
Intermittent power supply connection
Check all connections from the power source to the inverter. A loose barrel connector or intermittent battery contact can cause flickering that looks like a wire problem but is a power problem.
Inverter is overloaded
An inverter at maximum load may flicker. Reduce the wire footage connected to that inverter, or replace with a higher-rated TruEL inverter.
Check This Wire only glows for part of its length
Inverter underpowered for total footage
Partial glow that fades toward the far end is a classic sign of an underpowered inverter. The voltage drop across a long run can’t be sustained. Increase inverter wattage to match the full wire length.
Physical damage at the dark section
Inspect the wire at the point where the glow stops. A sharp bend, crush point, or cut can interrupt the circuit. If the wire is physically damaged at that location, that section will need to be removed.
Wire segments chained in series
TruEL Wire runs should connect to the inverter in parallel, not chained end-to-end. Series connections create voltage drop that causes far segments to be dim or dark.
Act Now Inverter is warm or hot to the touch
Inverter is overloaded
Power it off immediately. Calculate your wire footage and verify the inverter output wattage is sufficient with headroom. Continued operation risks inverter failure or damage to the wire.
Wrong inverter type
Standard EL inverters running TruEL Wire will overheat because they are not rated for the current draw. Replace with a TruEL-compatible inverter of the correct wattage.

Still Not Resolved?

If you have run through the checklist and issue-specific steps above and the wire is still not performing correctly, contact support before ordering replacement parts. Include: inverter model, total wire footage, description of the symptom, whether it started immediately or developed over time, and your application environment.
