How to Sew Light Into Your Garment

Four steps from selecting your thread to a lit, wearable piece. The SewGlo Calculator handles the math.

Step 01
🧵
Choose Your Thread
Pick LT for fine hand embroidery and delicate fabrics. HD for machine sewing, costumes, and production. XR for structural seams and long continuous runs.
Compare variants →
Step 02
⚙️
Select Machine Settings
Reduce needle speed by 20–30% on first pass. Use the largest needle eye that your fabric allows. SewGlo HD and XR run on industrial machines at standard settings.
See compatibility table →
Step 03
Choose an Inverter
SewGlo is EL-based — it needs a small inverter to illuminate. LumoS or LumoX for wearables. 12V inverter for XR long runs. Use the Calculator to match inverter to thread length.
Open SewGlo Calculator →
Step 04
Light It Up
Connect your inverter, seal the connector end if the garment will be washed, then power on. The thread glows continuously — no programming, no LEDs to position.

Machine Compatibility

Not all variants run on every machine. Confirm compatibility before ordering in volume — choosing the wrong thread for your equipment is the most common mistake we see first-time buyers make.

Where SewGlo™ Gets Used

From competition stage to runway — four markets where EL thread changes what garments can do.

Dance & Performance Costumes
Glowing outlines, animated hem lines, illuminated bodices. Thread survives choreography, sweat, and touring — washable between shows without disassembly.
Recommended: SewGlo™ HD
Popular for: ballet, contemporary dance, ice skating, aerial arts, marching band, drill team.
Fashion Runway & Editorial
Fine embroidery scripts, glowing seam lines, and illuminated logos that appear and disappear on demand — without visible wire between takes or during off-stage styling.
Recommended: SewGlo™ LT
Popular for: runway shows, lookbooks, music video wardrobe, editorial shoots, wearable art exhibitions.
Cosplay & Theatrical
Character suits with integrated illumination, glowing runes, lit seam lines, and glowing embroidered details — all invisible when powered off. No separate wire harness to manage.
Recommended: SewGlo™ HD
Popular for: convention cosplay, prop costuming, theatrical wardrobe, LARP gear, Halloween builds.
Wearable Tech Prototypes
Integrate light directly into e-textile architecture — no PCBs on the garment surface, no rigid strip bonding. SewGlo XR handles long structural seams and continuous 50m+ runs.
Recommended: SewGlo™ XR
Popular for: e-textile research, safety apparel, smart workwear, IoT garment prototypes, wearable lighting rigs.

Thread That's Actually Thread.

EL wire sits on top of fabric. LED strip needs a PCB. SewGlo™ runs through a needle and becomes part of the fabric itself.

Frequently Asked

Yes — all three SewGlo™ variants are designed for machine washing. The thread's coating is water-resistant and rated for repeated wash cycles. Standard care: machine wash cold, hang dry. The thread itself handles washing without issue.

The connector and battery pack are the parts that need attention. Always disconnect and remove the battery pack before washing. If the garment will be washed frequently, seal the connector end of the thread with a small amount of waterproof adhesive.

⚠ Never machine wash with the battery pack or inverter attached. Remove all electronics before laundering.

SewGlo LT is for hand sewing and home machines only — it breaks under the tension of industrial and commercial embroidery equipment. Use it for fine detail work on lightweight fabrics where precision matters more than output brightness.

SewGlo HD and XR both run on industrial sewing machines and commercial embroidery machines. For first-time use, reduce needle speed by 20–30% and use the largest needle eye your fabric allows. Once you've confirmed tension settings, you can increase speed to standard.

✦ See the full machine compatibility table above for a side-by-side breakdown of every variant across every machine type.

The SewGlo Calculator estimates how much thread you need based on your project type and garment size, then recommends the right inverter to match your total thread run. Enter your project type (jacket, dress, costume, etc.) and your size — it outputs a thread footage estimate and an inverter recommendation.

Buy 10–20% more than the estimate. Thread usage varies based on stitch density, pattern complexity, and seam routing — extra material lets you experiment without running short mid-build.

✦ For OEM and production quantities, contact us through Start a Project — we'll provide a detailed spec sheet with exact footage and inverter counts for your run size.

SewGlo is EL-based and requires an inverter or battery pack to illuminate — the thread does not include a power source. For wearables, the LumoS and LumoX are the most practical options. Both are USB rechargeable. LumoS is compact enough to embed in a shoe sole, hat brim, or bag strap. LumoX clips in place — good for jackets, costumes, and larger builds.

For SewGlo XR long runs (50m+), a standalone 12V inverter provides more consistent output over the full run length than a wearable pack. For garments where you want a pressable button through fabric, the AA Button Battery Pack activates through most fabric weights without a hidden switch.

✦ If you're buying by the meter and wiring your own connector, add a custom connector to your order so it plugs directly into any Ellumiglow battery pack or inverter.

Yes. We support production-quantity orders with custom spool lengths, bulk pricing, and production-tuned inverter packages. Minimum quantities and lead times depend on the variant and spool size — submit a project brief and we'll respond with a quote within 2 business days.

What to include in your brief: thread variant (LT / HD / XR), total footage per unit, number of units, color, connector type (if any), and target ship date. Custom inverter sizing for production runs is available if your garment has a specific total thread length we need to match.

✦ Production orders of 500m+ qualify for custom spool labeling and dedicated production support.
