Electroluminescent Thread Technology

SewGlo™ — Thread That Glows

SewGlo™ is electroluminescent thread you sew directly into your fabric. It produces soft, glowing lines wherever your needle goes.

How SewGlo™ Works

Three steps from spool to glowing stitch — works with home and industrial machines at reduced speed.

01

Thread Your Machine

Thread SewGlo™ into your sewing machine or hand needle exactly as you would standard thread. Compatible with most home and industrial machines.

02

Sew at Reduced Speed

Run your machine at around 60–70% of normal speed. SewGlo™ stitches, embroiders, and quilts just like regular thread — the result is a precise glowing line wherever your needle travels.

03

Connect & It Glows

Attach the thread’s lead to a SewGlo™-compatible inverter and power source. Every stitch illuminates — a precise glowing line following the exact path of your needle.

SewGlo™ vs VynEL™ vs EL Wire

Choosing the right glowing technology comes down to application method and the kind of light effect you need.

SewGlo™ in Action

Where customers take SewGlo™ thread — from competition dance floors to Hollywood costume departments.

Dance Costumes

Competition dance studios use SewGlo™ to stitch glowing patterns directly into bodysuits and skirts. Lightweight, wash-safe, and stage-ready for bright-lit venues.

Theater & Film

Costume departments on film sets and live productions use SewGlo™ for glowing costume details that read naturally on camera — no hot spots, no RF interference with sound equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

SewGlo™ HD and XR grades are compatible with most standard home sewing machines (Singer, Brother, Janome, Bernina) and industrial lockstitch machines. Run the machine at approximately 60–70% of its normal operating speed. The LT (fine/delicate) grade is best for hand sewing and high-end embroidery machines. If you’re unsure which grade fits your machine, contact us and we’ll advise.
Yes — SewGlo™ is hand-wash safe at 30°C. Machine washing is possible with a gentle cycle in a mesh laundry bag, but disconnect the power lead and seal any exposed connectors first. For performance costumes used repeatedly, hand washing preserves brightness the longest.
Thread consumption depends on your stitch density and pattern area. As a rough guide, a 10″×10″ filled embroidery pattern uses approximately 15–20 metres of thread, while outline-only designs use far less. Use our SewGlo™ Calculator to estimate the exact amount based on your stitch type and pattern size.
SewGlo™ requires a SewGlo-compatible EL inverter — this is different from standard EL wire inverters because SewGlo™ thread has a different capacitance profile. Ellumiglow sells matched SewGlo inverters sized by total thread length: small (up to 5m), medium (5–20m), and large (20–50m). Include the total thread length in your project when choosing an inverter.
No. Standard EL wire is a round-profile wire you route along the outside of fabric or inside channels. SewGlo™ is a 0.3 mm electroluminescent thread engineered to pass through the eye of a sewing needle and withstand the mechanical stress of machine sewing. The result is a glowing stitch pattern embedded directly into the weave of your fabric, not sitting on top of it.
