Executive Summary

VynEL is a revolutionary electroluminescent (EL) film technology that delivers reliable, energy-efficient, and flexible lighting solutions. Proven by global theme parks, Broadway productions, and Hollywood films, VynEL has become the industry standard for custom lighting applications requiring precision, durability, and design flexibility.

This white paper covers VynEL's core technology, product variants, industrial applications, manufacturing capabilities, and integration guidelines to help designers, manufacturers, and production teams evaluate VynEL for their projects.

Technology Overview

Five-Layer Construction

VynEL's performance comes from a carefully engineered five-layer architecture:

  1. Flexible Substrate Layer: EVA base providing mechanical support and flexibility
  2. Phosphor Layer: Industry-leading phosphor compounds delivering superior brightness and color accuracy
  3. Dielectric Layer: Ensures reliable light emission and long lifespan through optimized charge distribution
  4. Conductor Layer: Thin, conductive materials enabling efficient current flow across the entire panel
  5. Protective Surface Layer: UV-resistant and durable coating protecting the phosphor from environmental damage

This layered design provides zero heat generation, excellent flexibility (5mm bend radius), and consistent brightness across the entire panel without hot spots or degradation.

Standard Color Palette

VynEL is available in 11 standard colors including cool white, warm white, red, green, blue, cyan, magenta, and custom color options available upon request.

Industry Applications

Automotive

VynEL Cling is revolutionizing automotive applications with window decals, interior ambient lighting, and custom graphics. The material's flexibility and zero heat generation make it ideal for vehicle interiors and windscreen applications. Maximum panel size: 43" x 96" (109 x 244 cm).

Wearables & Safety

VynEL's flexibility and lightweight construction make it perfect for safety vests, performance costumes, and wearable lighting systems. The material can be sewn directly onto garments or laminated to textiles for seamless integration.

Fashion & Stage

Fashion designers and stage productions leverage VynEL for illuminated garments, set design, and interactive installations. Broadway productions have used VynEL extensively, and the material is washable and durable enough for repeated use.

Advertising & Signage

VynEL's brightness and color accuracy make it ideal for retail signage, point-of-purchase displays, and architectural lighting. Custom shapes and sizes can be integrated into existing signage systems.

Theme Parks & Entertainment

Global theme parks rely on VynEL for immersive experiences, attraction lighting, and visual effects. The technology's reliability and custom integration capabilities have made it the standard for high-volume entertainment applications.

Manufacturing & Tooling

Production Capacity

Ellumiglow operates manufacturing facilities with a monthly production capacity of 300,000+ panels. This capacity allows for both small custom projects and large-scale production runs.

Custom Tooling

Custom shapes and sizes are available with a tooling fee of $500 NRE (non-recurring engineering). Customers retain ownership of the tooling screen, allowing for future production runs at standard pricing.

Splicing & Integration

VynEL panels can be spliced together using specialized adhesive or heat bonding techniques to create larger custom displays.

Heat Bonding Specifications

  • Temperature: 300°F (149°C)
  • Pressure: 30–40 lbs
  • Duration: 15–20 seconds

Reel-to-Reel Manufacturing

Reel-to-reel manufacturing for continuous VynEL production is currently in development, enabling even greater efficiency for high-volume applications.

Manufacturing Spec Value
Monthly Capacity 300,000+ panels
Custom Tooling Fee $500 NRE
Max Panel Size 43" x 96" (109 x 244 cm)
Standard Colors 11 options
Heat Bond Temp 300°F / 30–40 lbs / 15–20 sec

Design Considerations & Limitations

Power Requirements

VynEL requires an AC inverter power supply. Power consumption is 5–15 mA per square inch, scaling linearly with panel size. Larger installations require careful power distribution planning.

Brightness

Brightness ranges from 250–400 cd/m² depending on color and phosphor variant. White and cool colors are brightest; red and warm colors are dimmer. This should be considered when designing color schemes.

Lifespan

VynEL has a rated lifespan of 5,000–7,000 hours at 400 Hz operation. This translates to approximately 2–3 years of continuous operation or 5–10 years of typical use (8 hours per day).

Panel Size Limitations

Maximum standard panel size is 43" x 96" (109 x 244 cm). Larger installations require splicing multiple panels together or custom engineering.

Flexibility

VynEL has a minimum bend radius of 5 mm. This allows for curved surfaces but requires careful handling to avoid permanent damage or creasing.

Integration Methods

VynEL can be integrated through:

  • Heat bonding (300°F, 30–40 lbs, 15–20 seconds)
  • Adhesive lamination
  • Mechanical fastening (with careful edge protection)
  • Sewn integration (for garment applications)

Environmental Considerations

Standard VynEL is suitable for indoor and controlled outdoor environments. Splash variant (IP67) is required for wet or heavily outdoor applications. The material is machine washable (cold water, gentle cycle).
