Machine & Setup FAQ

Some computerized machines have optical thread sensors that detect thread by its diameter. SewGlo™ HD and XR can sometimes trigger these as a "broken thread" false positive. Disable the automatic thread sensor in your machine's settings (usually under "Sewing Settings → Thread Sensor → Off"), or look for a manual override. Singer HD, Bernina, and Pfaff users rarely see this issue. Brother SE/NX computerized models are the most common culprits.
Yes — running SewGlo™ LT or HD in the bobbin is a great technique for embroidery machines and machines where needle threading is constrained. The thread glows on the reverse side and "pulls through" to the face side with a longer stitch length. Use a standard thread on top. This is the recommended approach for commercial multi-needle embroidery machines (Happy, Tajima, Barudan). For bobbin-only use, stitch length 3.5–4.5mm gives the best face-side glow visibility.
A standard presser foot works fine for SewGlo™ LT. For SewGlo™ HD, a roller foot reduces friction and gives a more consistent stitch. For XR, a walking foot is strongly recommended — it feeds the thick thread evenly and prevents tension spikes that can cause skipped stitches or needle breakage on heavy fabrics.
Loopy bottom stitches almost always mean the top tension is too loose. Increase your top tension in 0.5 increments and test on scrap fabric. Start at 4.5–5 for LT, 4–4.5 for HD. If tightening tension doesn't fix it, check that your needle is the correct size — an undersized needle causes the thread to drag and pool under the fabric. Also confirm the thread is routed correctly through the tension discs: SewGlo™ sometimes needs slightly more force to seat properly, especially at the uptake lever.
No — when used as specified, SewGlo™ won't damage your machine. The main risk is sewing too fast with SewGlo™ HD or XR: high speed generates heat at the needle tip that can soften the thread's outer coating and cause it to stiffen. Sew at 50% or lower speed, and let the machine cool for 30 seconds between long seams if running continuously. Always use the correct needle size — sewing with a needle that's too small creates excess friction and is the most common cause of thread snapping.
SewGlo™ LT can run in the looper position (upper or lower looper) of most sergers — not the needle position, where it's too thick to thread reliably. Running SewGlo™ LT through a looper creates a glowing decorative edge along seams and hems. This is particularly popular for activewear and costumes. HD and XR are not recommended for sergers because the extra thickness causes looper timing issues on most machines.
