SewGlo is a unique electroluminescent (EL) wire designed for seamless integration into fabrics, making it an ideal lighting solution for apparel, costumes, and creative projects. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process of making a proper SewGlo connection so you can get the best performance from your SewGlo thread.
For a detailed visual demonstration, check out our instructional video:
Before getting started, gather the following tools and materials:
SewGlo Thread/Wire
EL Wire Connector Kit
Soldering Iron & Solder
Heat Shrink Tubing
Wire Strippers
Power Inverter (Compatible with EL Wire)
Cut your SewGlo wire to the desired length.
Strip about ½ inch (12mm) of the outer phosphor coating to expose the inner core wires. In order to expose the conductors, let it sit in alcohol for about 1-2 minutes.
Carefully separate the two fine angel hair wires from the central core. Newer versions of this angel hair wires are a fibrous structure.
Twist the two fine angel hair wires together.
Wrap the twisted wires around the connector tab for a secure connection.
Take the central core wire and insert it into the opposite side of the connector.
Solder the connections in place to ensure a strong electrical connection.
Slide a piece of heat shrink tubing over the connection before applying heat.
Use a heat gun to shrink the tubing, securing the wires.
For added protection, wrap electrical tape around the tubing.
Plug the completed SewGlo connection into your EL wire inverter.
Turn on the inverter to test the connection and ensure the wire illuminates correctly.
No Light? Check that all wires are securely soldered and insulated properly.
Flickering Wire? Ensure that the angel hair wires and core wire are making good contact with the connector.
Dim Lighting? Make sure you’re using the correct power inverter for your length of SewGlo wire.
By following these steps, you’ll create a durable and efficient connection for your SewGlo EL wire, ensuring a bright and long-lasting glow. For more guidance, don’t forget to watch the full video tutorial here. Happy sewing and glowing!
